1. What is Faculty Self Service?

Faculty Self Service provides faculty members and advisors access to records in the SIS Plus database using web technology.  It allows faculty members to see their teaching assignment schedules, a list of students in each of the their courses, curriculum and academic information about students, and gives them the ability to enter mid-term progress for freshmen and to enter official grades.  It was purchased from SCT Corporation and customized by Tennessee Tech University. The URL is:

5. When is it available?

8 am to midnight Central Standard Time Monday thru Friday.
12 noon to 12 midnight weekends.

top

6. Why isn't Web for Faculty and Advisors available 24 hours a day?

The files you are accessing are not stored on the Eagle Online Web server (which is normally up 24 hours a day), but on the campus mainframe computer. Nightly mainframe jobs require that the mainframe's student record files be closed, thus making them inaccessible to Faculty Self Service.

7. What is a "Faculty ID Number"?

Your Faculty ID Number is your Social Security Number.

top

8. What is a "PIN" and how do I get one?

Your PIN ("Personal Identification Number") is a six-digit number that serves as the password for access to SIS Plus student records.  A program was run to initially set PINs for existing faculty.   New faculty members must have a PIN assigned to them by their departmental secretary.  If you do not know yours, contact your departmental secretary.  When you type your PIN, it will appear as ****** to prevent others from seeing it. All six digits must be entered (if your PIN has leading zeros, enter them also).

It is very important that you change your pin as soon as possible and not share this with anyone.

9. How do I change my PIN?
Online
  1. Go to the Faculty Self Service home page at https://wserve.tntech.edu/webdocs/afhomepg1.htm.
  2. Log in with your Faculty ID and PIN.
  3. Click on Change PIN and follow the instructions there. After you have changed your PIN, you will be required to login again.

10. Who can I advise?

After you have logged into Faculty Self Service, click on My Advisees on the drop down list under Advisor and it will provide a list of all of the students who are assigned to you for advising.  Select one from the list and click the Select button. You will then be able to select another option from the drop down list under Advisor for this student.  If you would like to advise a student that is not assigned to you for advising, click on Advise By StudentID or Name and enter the student's id (ssn) or name in the box provided. Then click the Search button to find a match for the information you entered. If a match is found for your search criteria, a list will be provided. Select a student from the list and click the Select button.

12. What can I do to protect my records?

Don't reveal your PIN to anyone and protect the use of your Faculty ID Number.
When you are finished, log off from Faculty Self Service (click the Exit button) and exit from the browser.
Change your PIN once you receive it, and at least once a year thereafter. Some choices of Pins are more secure than others; less secure (i.e., easily guessed) Pins include: Birth date, phone number, address, and zip code; 000000, 999999, 123456, etc.
The PIN Verification screen shows the date your records were last accessed via Faculty Self Service. If this date does not match the date you last logged on, it is possible someone else has accessed your records. Please change your PIN immediately and report this incident to the Office of Records at 102 Derryberry Hall.

13. How secure is my information on Faculty Self Service?

Information is encrypted before it is transmitted over the Internet using SSL technology.
A valid Faculty ID Number and PIN must be provided before access to any information is allowed.
Data is encrypted before it is passed between the web server and the mainframe computer.

top

14. What if the information shown in my records is incorrect?

Contact the Office of the Registrar at 102 Derryberry Hall, phone (931) 372-3317.

top

15. When I click "log in", my browser says it cannot load the page.

This indicates your browser does not support the "SHA" encryption algorithm.

16. I am getting "This session has expired", sometimes after only a few seconds, or soon after I verify my PIN.

Sometimes, simply exiting and restarting your browser will clear this error.

  1. Your Faculty Self Service session was left inactive for too long
Be sure to log out of Faculty Self Service and exit from your browser when you are finished. Leaving a Faculty Self Service session logged in and unattended invites others to view your information.
  2. You've already exited from Faculty Self Service
Once you exit, you must login again.
  3. Your PC is running Web accelerator or download accelerator software
If you have purchased or downloaded one of these accelerator programs, please uninstall or disable it.
  4. You are using America Online's browser
You can use Internet Explorer or Netscape with AOL. There is an issue with the AOL caching proxy server and the AOL web browser. The workaround is to open a separate instance of IE or Netscape in order to access Faculty Self Service. You most likely will run into problems if you use AOL's browser. The phone number for AOL technical support is (800) 827-3338.
  5. Excessive system load
The mainframe system could not respond to your request within a reasonable period of time.
  6. You pressed your browser's Stop button or the Esc key, then clicked a link
Interrupting Faculty Self Service while it is working on your request requires that you log back in.
  7. You are behind a firewall
As a security measure, Faculty Self Service builds a key to identify you and your session. This key includes your IP address. If you are coming through a firewall, it is possible that your internal address will be translated to a different external address each time you leave your site. If this happens, Faculty Self Service views it as a security breach and tells you that you must log in again. To solve this, see your network administrator to get a static IP address or map to a static translation.
  8. Your Internet provider uses HTTP proxies
As a security measure, Faculty Self Service builds a key to identify you and your session. This key includes your IP address. If you are coming through a proxy server, the proxy server may use multiple IP addresses. If the proxy attempts to get pages using different IP addresses, Faculty Self Service will view this as a security violation and tell you that you must log in again. Using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, it is possible to use a proxy server but set exceptions. IE or Netscape will not go through the proxy for these sites listed as exceptions thus alleviating the problem. In IE, go to View | Internet Options | Connection | Proxy Server | Advanced and enter https://wserve.tntech.edu/webdocs/afhomepg1.htm under Exceptions. In Netscape, go to Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Proxies | View (next to Manual Proxy Configuration) and enter https://wserve.tntech.edu/webdocs/afhomepg1.htm under Exceptions.
  9. You are using WebTV
WebTV uses HTTP proxies (see above) with their set-top boxes. There is currently no solution available for WebTV users. The problem lies with the configuration of the WebTV set-top boxes and cannot be resolved at Tennessee Tech.
  10. You double-clicked a link
Links should be clicked only once.

17. I got an error message. What does it mean?

"The identity certificate uses an unknown algorithm signature"
This usually occurs on Internet Explorer for Macintosh versions 4.5 and earlier, and is due to a security bug in that browser. The solution is to upgrade.
"A network error occurred while Netscape was receiving data"
Click on Netscape's Options menu and select the Security Preferences option. In the dialog box that comes up, make sure that the "Enable SSL v2" and "Enable SSL v3" boxes are both checked.

18. Why does my browser try to download a file named tsrvweb.exe when I click a link?

This can happen if "download accelerator" or "web accelerator" software is installed on your PC. It can also be caused by a broken HTTP proxy server at your Internet Service Provider's site. Also, you may have upgraded your browser from a version in which you specified to "always download EXE files", and the new version doesn't permit you to reverse this setting.

top

19. I can't log in because of the error, "The identity certificate uses an unknown signature algorithm".

This is a bug in Internet Explorer 4.1 and 4.5 for the Macintosh.

According to a technical note from Verisign:

If you are using Internet Explorer (IE) 4.1 or 4.5 for the Macintosh, you will receive this error, as these browsers do not support SHA1. In order to resolve this issue, you will need to upgrade to a browser that does support SHA1. All Mac IE browsers newer than 4.5 do support it.
You can upgrade to IE version 5 or later for Macintosh or use Netscape Navigator.

20. Why can't I email my class from the email link at the top of my class list?

This feature is dependent upon the FROM email address in the email being sent. If the FROM email address is anything other than your tntech.edu email address it will not work. Also, some users on campus use a department email server and that will not work either. If you still encounter problems, try sending the email from WebMail.
